***Demo Call***

Sexual harassment in Berlin is real, be it in the streets, on public

transport, in clubs and bars, at work or in the private sphere at home. We conducted a small survey to grasp the extent of harassment beyond our circles. The survey revealed that the vast majority of participants (~70%) had experienced and/or witnessed sexual harassment. It is fair to say that nearly every woman* is experiencing harassment which strongly influences how and where they move in Berlin. It became very clear that this kind of harassment is not a personal issue but a structural problem. It is deeply rooted in power structures of our patriarchal society, or as almost everyone (95%) in the survey stated that one of the main reasons behind sexual harassment is a misguided mindset of males* about females*, or the other way around. If we want to see real change, we have to break free from the presumptions and the fixed concepts of what it means to be a woman* or a man* as it affects all types of gender harmfully.

Despite the prevalence and frequency of sexual harassment, affected persons are not taken seriously. Nevertheless, women* and men* who have been harassed report that their behavior and confidence is affected, and they experience distress and anxiety, yet society continues to focus on the actions of victims and not on the perpetrators. It is common to be told that you are overreacting, that you have misinterpreted the situation, or that it simply isn’t a big deal. What such responses fail to recognize is that the incident itself is just the tip of the iceberg – the full impact often continues long afterwards. Sexual harassment is not a one-time action, it is a deeply rooted feeling of fear that follows you in all public and private spaces. In the last years, women* have increasingly spoken out and demanded action! There is still a long way to go and we will continue to fight!

[발언문]

Hi, im Minji, a participant of the group metoo koreanerinnen and asian womans solidarity. I am so happy to be with here with you today. Today i want to talk about the Hornbach Advertisement, which many of you already know about and made you furious.

In a series of advertisements released by Hornbach on March 15th, five white men’s undershirts, dirty and soiled with sweat from working in the garden, are vacuum-sealed and sold in a vending machine in a city. A young Asian woman buys and smells them, and ends up moaning in ecstasy.

Although Hornbach announced on twitter that there was no “intention” of sexual or racial discrimination, we, who appeared in your advertisement, do feel that we have been subjected to sexual and racial discrimination.

Hornbach has ignored thousands of protests and the demand of the Asian community for a sincere apology. Instead, they have been capitalizing shamelessly on the noise-marketing and playing off the media attention. Even when the German Advertising Board evaluated the advertisement as indeed racist and warned that they would face disciplinary measures if they do not immediately change or stop the advertisement, Hornbach furtively moved to a new advertisement on April 15th, with no apology.

At this point, it is doubtful whether it is a mere “mistake” based on ignorance of racial minorities that the company made the racist advertisement, or whether the company itself has a policy of racial discrimination.

We, metoo Koreanerinnen and Asian womans solidarity have conducted three demonstrations so far. On april 6th and 13th, we did a one peron relay demo in front of Hornbach stores in neukölln and in weissensee. 8 people participated at the first demo, 13 people at the second. Each of the demonstrant had their own time slot, which lasted about 30 minutes to 1 hour. We hold our pickets and talked to customers. It was a lot of fun. We, people with different genders and nationalities could continue the demo for the whole day. And on april 27th, we had a mass demonstration in oranienplatz, in front of advertisement company heimat, which made this rassist and sexist advertisement. We protested and shouted.

Despite our demonstrations and countless letters, hornbach is still not apologizing. It secretly changed the advertisement with another one, but its not enough. What we want is a sincere apology to all of us. So we are planning another one person relay demo on wedensday, may 29th, in front of advertisement company heimat. It is on Wednesday. Normally we do a demo on weekends, but heimat doesnt open on weekends, and thats why we plan this demo on wednesday. I hope you all got our flyer. I invite you to this demo. it would be a lot of fun. Those of you who want to participate, please visit asian womans solidarity facebook page, and send us a message. Or you can visit metoo koreanerinnen homepage, and send a short email.

The next protest on may 29th not the last one. We will continue our protest until we receive a public apology from Hornbach.

Hornbach must offer an apology without any reservations to women and minority groups.

Thank you.

[발언문]

Hi, my sisters and brothers. I am Seonmin from South Korea. Let me tell you my personal story that I haven’t talked in front of such many people like this.

It was a long time ago. I was only 5 or 6. This old neighbour was horny and brought me his home. He forced me to do sexual things. I didn’t know what it was but I resisted it so he said he is gonna treat me an icecream to make me calm down. I said l want that icecream right now. As he opened the front door to buy one,  I ran away as fast as possible. After all, I was traumatised so much.

It was first sexual violence that I’ve experienced ever in my life. Unfortunately, it was not the last. In class, on street, in transportation, in Korea, in Europe, there were men from aged 10 to 70 who sexually harassed me. I have been through this hell in my whole life.

In berlin, it happened again and again. Racism from strangers or yellow fever men was an extra unhappiness. I was depressed and couldn’t go out because I was too scared to see people. My studio room was Berlin for me since I only stayed in the room. I rejected the world out of it.

Through all these things, I realized one thing. In Korea, I am a ‘woman’ who is not equivalent to men as a human being. And in Germany, I am often objectified as ‘Asian woman’ rather than just a person. I am sure sexual harassement comes from  sexism and any form of discrimination. I disagree with the excuses like “men are supposed to want sex more”, “men think about sex all the time”. Then why do heterosexual men rape other men when they are homophobic? It is because they want to dominate them. Why do many women suffer from sexual harassment from men? It is because Many men still want to dominate women.  Everyone thinks all kinds of violence and oppression should not exist in society.  No one should go through these. But they are very common in someone’s life. That’s why we are here. I believe we will have the life without them, if we keep fighting against it. Thank you for listening.
